FO: Brushstrokes Plus

FO: Brushstroke Plus

It's no secret that I love plus quilts.
I made this one using Jeni's Arithmetic pattern a few years back, and decided it was time for another!

Holly released her first fabric line earlier this year, Brushstrokes, for Cloud 9.

I paired the bundle Holly sent with a few black and white prints, as well as a smattering of pastel Cotton Couture solids.

A quilt like this comes together pretty quickly, especially if you have a design wall. I tend to use the floor for this task, since my "design wall" is only about a yard of space (but I'm glad to have it!) (and hi Olias!).

FO: Brushstroke Plus

I quilted this very simply with diagonal lines, and I love the way it turned out.

And of course, I love the back.

FO: Long Addition

I'm sure by now, you've heard about the new Sun Print and Clover Sunshine fabric lines, by the fabulous Alison Glass of Andover. There have been some amazing projects made as part of the release (see links below!).

I was thrilled when Alison asked me to participate in her blog event. I love her style, and her sense of color. She is an amazing artist and has such a warm heart.

Alison sent me several fat quarters to work with, and I dug through my solid stash to find a fun pairing. I landed on a Pink Chalk Fabrics solids bundle, called Hot Summer Nights. It included a variety of bold pinks, oranges, and some purple and brown. I thought it worked perfectly with Alison's palette!

LA 2

And truth be told, I am in love with this quilt.
I used Jeni's Arithmetic pattern, and made the throw size (dimensions: 64" x 76").

LA 1

I completely love the colors, and a plus quilt is always a happy choice. This is my first full plus quilt, but I made a few pillows previously.

LA 5

I quilted it in what I call "loopy squares". There is probably a more official name for this type of quilting.

Long Addition

LA 3

I backed it in one of my favorite Sun Print fabrics (purchased from Stash Fabrics!), the magenta feathers!

Alison is having a huge giveaway, as part of the release, with a prize of 74 fat quarters!

HCB: Christmas Plus Pillow Tutorial

This marks the halfway point for the Holiday Craft Bash!

Today, I'm going to share a tutorial for an 18" plus pillow! I recently made one for my friend Rhonda, and decided to make another in reds and greens (and a pop of black!)!

List of materials:

-Sixteen 2.5" strips of different fabrics (at least 15" long; you can use less different fabrics if desired)
-1/2 yard fabric for back
-FQ of light solid (white or off-white) for lining
-20" or 22" zipper
Double-sided fusible tape, similar to Steam-A-Seam 2

Directions:

FRONT

1) Cut 2.5" squares from your strips. Cut five squares from fifteen of the fabrics, and cut six from the last one.
This will give you a total of 81 squares, for a 9 x 9 grid.

2) Find a clean space (this is a job in itself in my sewing room!) that won't be disturbed (by kitties , for instance) and layout your grid.
I like to start in the middle and make one plus, then add additional pluses around it.
You'll need to finish at the outer perimeter, with partial pluses. This takes some time to arrange.
Consider value and color as you do this!
3)Starting with the first row, sew your pieces together with a quarter-inch seam.

I like to sew pairs together, and then blocks.
Be careful not to misplace your pieces!
4)Continue sewing your pieces together, until you have a finished top!
5)Cut an 18.5 x 18.5" piece from your white or off-white solid.
6)With wrong sides together, topstitch (1/8" seam) the edge of the pillow top/white fabric. This is to protect/hide all of those seams!

BACK
6)Cut one 20" x 19" piece from the half yard of fabric, and one 4" x 19" strip from a coordinating fabric (or you can use the same fabric as your 20 x 19" piece).

I'm going to direct you to another tutorial for the pillow back. This is my favorite pillow enclosure, and the tutorial is very well written.

Covered zipper tutorial by Creative Little Daisy

Install your zipper using this tutorial, and then come back! I'll wait.
You should now have a pillow back with a zipper!
7)Finally, with zipper at least halfway open, pin your pillow front and back together (with right sides facing each other).
8)Sew, with 1/2" seam allowance around the perimeter.
Flip inside out, and you're done!

Some HELPFUL TIPS:
*For plus piecing, I prefer to sew my seams open, because it helps me match them better.
*Precise cutting makes for precise piecing!
*I prefer to sew my pieces into blocks, and try to only make one or two long seams. This helps me stay accurate, too. (i.e.-don't sew squares into strips, but "clumps").

As always, make sure you add any finished projects to the Holiday Craft Bash flickr group for a chance at the prizes!

Pluses to the perimeter

I fully expected to post sooner than this, but when your air conditioning goes out, it's not a great idea to add heat to the room with your computer. I'm popping in quickly to share a few things, though! Our AC should be fixed today, or tomorrow at the latest!

First up, thanks to everyone that entered the giveaway! The winner is commenter #90, Mimi! She said, "I like a bundle with 8 to 10!! Your selection is great !! Thanks for the chance!!

I've emailed Mimi about her win.

It was really interesting to read all of your comments, and it sounds like a bundle with 8-12 is ideal.

I have a finished SWOON quilt to share with you, but no pictures yet! There's also a little cross-stitch and knitting to share.

Today, I want to share a pillow I recently made for a dear friend.

Rhonda was interested in a plus pillow after seeing the pillow I made for Kate.

greens

I pulled a variety of greens from the stash (always the best part).

Plus pillow top

Every time I make plus blocks, I want to make more!

FO: Green Pluses to the Perimeter

I really didn't want to give this pillow away, but since Rhonda's a pretty awesome chick, I did. She seems to love it!

My favorite part is the covered zipper:

I installed this zipper using the Sew, Mama, Sew tutorial.

I'll be back soon with some more finishes!

In the works

My brain can't seem to focus this week.

Wonky Bee Round 3

I've been thinking about this pile of fabrics, which I've pulled together for Round 3 of the Wonky Bee. The wonky girls have decided to do a traveling bee for this round, partially inspired by the Traveling Quilts group.
I think it will be lots of fun, and I've gotten to know these girls so well over the past few years!
I'm still not sure what my "plan" (I use that term loosely) will be for the quilt, but I know my fabric will be in good hands. I'm supposed to get the quilt started before passing it on to the first person, which is Amanda!

This will be a fairly relaxed bee, with two months for each portion of the quilt, and next fall, we'll all have finished quilt tops to share!

HSTs

I've also been steady trimming these little half-square triangles. These are being made from Swoon and Which Way leftovers (both of which are still NOT FINISHED). I find it relaxing to trim up a pile every new and then, when I need a break from sewing.

I also used the last of a gift certificate (I tend to savor those gift certificates; this one was from Christmas!) during Pink Castle's labor day sale.

New text prints

I got a few new text prints.

New stash

And this fun pile as well!

I'm working to finish up this plus pillow for my friend Rhonda today.
After that, who knows??

What are you working on?

Stella +

Happy Valentine's Day! Do you remember the Echo pillow I sent Nicke? Ah, I'm still so in love with that yellow stitching.
Well, last week, I got my lovely pillow! Nicke knew I would fall for a gray and yellow plus pillow. She was right.

Nicke's outdone herself

She used some lovely prints, including Dear Stella, Amy Butler, Ruby and others.

I heart you, plus quilt

Nicke handquilted around some of the pluses, and it just looks lovely! She also included an invisible zipper, which looks masterful!

I would certainly call this a successful swap! Nicke is so much fun, and I feel lucky to count her as my friend.

FO: Kate's Plus Pillow

I finished the first of the giveaway pillows. Kate received her pillow this weekend, so now I can share it with you!

Kate adores green, and I just happen to have lots of green in the stash (I love it, too!).

I've been dying to try a plus quilt, and when I looked at Kate's favorites, I knew this would be a perfect excuse to do so.

Kate's Pillow

Honestly, the layout is the only tricky part (and I can imagine doing so for a full quilt is pretty arduous, especially with curious kitties!). I LOVED making this! I used Essex Linen with the prints, which include a recently stashed Suzuko Koseki, some favorite dots (Amy Butler, Ta Dot and It's a Hoot!), Joel Dewberry faves, Leaf Dots, Sundae Stripe, etc. Ah, lots of favorites here, really!

FO: Kate's Plus Pillow

I quilted the front, and resisted the urge to make this an envelope style pillow.

I installed a zipper, which I then had to rip out and try again. My first zipper looked nice, but was not big enough to wedge a pillow through! Ha. Lessons learned! So, a second zipper was installed, but next time, I'll stick with what I know!

I think Kate was really pleased with her pillow! It was especially fun to make this for her since I met her at Sewing Summit.

In other pillow giveaway news, the first winner that didn't respond sent me an email the same day I posted about the replacement winner.

Virginia had never won anything on a blog before, so I decided I will honor her winnings. So, two pillows left for the giveaway. I've started on the second pillow. Hopefully, I'll be able to share it in the next couple of weeks!
