FO: Handcrafted Prism

Maybe knowing that this quilt top was finished in October 2016 will make you feel inspired to finish a lingering project of your own.
This is Prism, from Jeni's Patchwork Essentials book.
I knew the design was a great way to let the Handcrafted fabrics (by Alison Glass) shine.

I just love the colors and the effect of quarter square triangles is always striking!

This photo gives you a nice idea of the quilting, which I did in a soft rosy pink.

And I love the asterisk binding, which plays off the quilting.

And the back! I honestly love it as much as the front.

I managed to get a quilt basted late last week, and I'm just about to start quilting.

Happy 2018 to you! I hope the new year is treating you well so far, and that you are able to accomplish the goals that you have set.
An idea popped into my head yesterday, and I decided that I want to try weekly posts here, with the projects I'm working on, and a few other weekly tidbits.
I still hope to share FO posts, but last year, I found myself faltering on posts. I'm hopeful that this informal weekly entry will be an approachable reboot for me.
Also, for a few years, Jeni and I have helped hold each other accountable on goals, but I never joined her on keeping track of fabric yardage. I managed to buy less overall than previous years, but I decided it's time for me to keep track of that.
So, at the end of each month, I'll share what yardage I've accumulated, as well as what I've used. I won't count yardage used until a project is finished.
As for yarn, I've been somewhat tracking that (and have greatly reduced the amount of yarn I buy). (side note to that: I've got a lot of pretties available on my ravelry destash)

After that, I picked up my marled scarf (this is a gift for a friend), and have made great progress. It's about 40 inches long now!

I also finished binding my Prism quilt and hope to get it photographed this weekend. Here's a progress shot. I love it! The pattern is in Jeni's Patchwork Essentials and fabric is all Alison Glass Handcrafted (except the binding).

I started off 2017 trying to read every day, but went bust a few months in, and only managed to finish a handful of books. This year, I'm starting with a very enjoyable book, and am halfway done. Have you read it?

And finally, I want to share this recipe, which I've been enjoying all week: BA Yellow Split Pea Soup with Spiced Coconut. As in 2016, we have set a goal of 3 new recipes a month, from our magazine and cookbook collection.

I hope you enjoy this new format. Thanks for sticking with me, through sporadic posts! I still love to create, and hope that never changes.

2016 quilts

I used to do recap posts, and I always enjoyed the process. In the new year, I hope to keep better track of my projects, and whittle down my WIPs (currently, I have 27 quilt WIPs). Looking back, I finished 13 quilts in 2016.

FO: Feathers

Way back in January 2014, I posted about the Feathers QAL, for the pattern by Alison Glass and Nydia Khenle.

I worked through the blocks fairly quickly, and instagram tells me that I finished the quilt top 93 weeks ago. So, the gist is, it took me less than a year to finish the top, and then it sat for over a year.

But, good news! I finished it, and here is proof!

I really love how it turned out, and I never tire of that cerise Architextures background!

We visited McKinney Falls over the weekend for a hike, and took this quilt along.

I used a big piece of a Melissa Averinos Sugar Snap print (Spirograph!) and two coordinating prints for the back. I quilted it with three different colors of thread in "organic" straight lines.

It feels good to get a 2014 WIP finished up so it can be loved again!

Handcrafted

You may have already seen the new Handcrafted line from Alison Glass. If you haven't, take a look:

I'm in love. These fabrics are so rich and are lovely to work with.

I made a Datura blouse, using Petal in Eggplant and Andover Chambray.
For those of you keeping count, that's my fourth Datura.
I sort of love that pattern.

I helped Alison at quilt market this past weekend, and I learned a lot from her on booth building and other topics.

She's the sweetest. Her booth was full of color and inspiration. I can't wait to see what Alison creates next, and I can't wait to cut into these fabrics!

Geranium in Grenada

While in Grenada, I got the chance to photograph Adelaide in her Geranium dress that I made last year.

I made the 12-18 month size, and at 18 months, she is still getting lots of wear out of it. Seeing her in it made my heart sing. She's such a sweet kiddo.

In other Geranium news, Alison Glass has featured several projects made with her new Field Day fabric, including the Geranium dress I made for spring market. You should check out the post, as she's giving away a fat quarter bundle and an Aurifil box!

FO: Scrappy Trip

Hello! I got back into town a few days ago from visiting E's sister and family in Granada. I have thoughts and pictures to share from that adventure, but first, I want to show you my scrappy trip around the world.

I finished this up and photographed it before we left, and I really love it. I won't lie; the process of making this quilt was a little boring to me. I started the quilt over a year ago, and stalled out with just a block or two made before January.

I took it to the Stash Bash, and was able to finish a few more blocks.

When I was planning my projects for round two of Madison, WI (I went last month, and I don't think I shared that here!), I knew that this quilt would be goal number one.

I managed to finish the top while I was there, and immediately quilted it when I got home.

I quilted in a simple crosshatch through each square, which really didn't take very long at all.

Oh, and the backing is two similar prints from the stash: (Alison Glass Bike Path in grass and Patty Young Circle Stitch in Olive. I bound with an eternal favorite: Joel Dewberry Modern Meadow Herringbone in Lake.

This quilt reminds me of our wedding, because many of the strips I used are leftovers from the wedding souvenir napkins I made.

On the Madison trip, I kept insisting that this would be only scrappy trip quilt ever, and Jeni teased that I would change my mind on that. As much as I love it, I really don't see myself making another, but who knows?

FO: A Study in Blue

I have been pretty obsessed with the BBC Sherlock series. I haven't finished it yet, but I've been rewatching the older episodes in preparation. Additionally, I just read "A Study in Scarlet" for the first time. It was fun to compare the episode and story as it was originally written. It popped into my brain when I was coming up with a name for this project.

I just sent Amanda her Wonky Bee swap package. A few years back, we had plans to each make this mini quilt, from the Purl Bee Golden Wreath tutorial.

Of course, we got distracted, and I sort of forgot about it. When I was planning my package for Amanda, I thought it would be a nice treat for her.

I used a variety of blues, predominately Kona Cotton, and I used a favorite light grey Alison Glass Sun Print for the background and binding. Elizabeth suggested using the same fabric for the binding and background, and I'm so glad I took her advice!

I used several blue threads to quilt it, with converging lines in the center. I chose to do this in a random way, to match the scrappy wedges.

I used one of Amanda's favorites, from Lizzy House's Constellations, for the back. Oh, and I used Jeni's machine binding tutorial. As much as I LOVE to hand bind, I chose to machine bind, since my wrist has been giving me fits lately.

Honestly, it was hard to give this one away, but I know it will have a good home with Amanda, and she deserves it.

Field Day Geranium Dress

Alison was kind enough to send me some of her upcoming Field Day fabric and asked that I make another little Geranium dress for her booth. She also sent some Andover Chambray (the skirt fabric). This is my second time using the chambray and it is so lovely for garments. Side note: I also recently bought a cut of the Textured Solids, and I'm excited to use it!

I used Aurifil 1148, which I especially like on the heathered purple chambray.

I don't think I'll ever run out of buttons, thanks to my grandmother. I found these little yellow buttons in a box of her treasures (and I'm thankful she instilled me with a love for sewing!).

I love the little pocket and the tiny gathers, too. There are lots of great details in this dress.

I know I've said it before, but the Geranium Dress is such a great gift, and easy to stitch.

FO: Clover Geranium

Sorry to disappear again! I spent the last week out of town, and am catching up on home life this week. I meant to share this with you before I left, but I made another Geranium dress, this time for Alison Glass.

Alison sent me this adorable Clover Sunshine print and some Andover chambray to make this version. Alison shared it at her Quilt Market schoolhouse session.

I just love the button details on this dress, and the fun print she sent for the lining (also from Clover Sunshine)!

I have now sewn this dress several times, and I really enjoy making them! I always drag my feet on the hem and buttonholes. It's the little things.

FO: Long Addition

I'm sure by now, you've heard about the new Sun Print and Clover Sunshine fabric lines, by the fabulous Alison Glass of Andover. There have been some amazing projects made as part of the release (see links below!).

I was thrilled when Alison asked me to participate in her blog event. I love her style, and her sense of color. She is an amazing artist and has such a warm heart.

Alison sent me several fat quarters to work with, and I dug through my solid stash to find a fun pairing. I landed on a Pink Chalk Fabrics solids bundle, called Hot Summer Nights. It included a variety of bold pinks, oranges, and some purple and brown. I thought it worked perfectly with Alison's palette!

And truth be told, I am in love with this quilt.
I used Jeni's Arithmetic pattern, and made the throw size (dimensions: 64" x 76").

I completely love the colors, and a plus quilt is always a happy choice. This is my first full plus quilt, but I made a few pillows previously.

I quilted it in what I call "loopy squares". There is probably a more official name for this type of quilting.

I backed it in one of my favorite Sun Print fabrics (purchased from Stash Fabrics!), the magenta feathers!
